Finally finished translating the Apology of Socrates. I have learned that, aside from being an annoying bastard, Socrates was also the funniest bitch in ancient Athens. When facing the death penalty and asked what alternate punishment he should be given he really went “Actually, I think the government should give me free meals for the rest of my life.” like if I was a juror I would be like we have to acquit him I don’t care how often he bothers me in the agora he’s too funny to kill.

#m #he then says he'll pay a fine #and proposes 1 mina #which is like #$500 #which is comically low seeing as the normal fine for that would be measured in talents #which are equivalent to 60 minae #the line is then immediately followed by him saying his friends are urging him to tell the jury he'll pay 30 minas #which i presume means that plato and the others rushed up to him and were desperately trying to come up with enough money #to have the fine be taken seriously
