for my greek civ class my professor assigned last minute extra credit which was just submit an interpretation of greek mythology in modern media. i linked “Ulysses Dies at Dawn” and her only feedback was “that was sad! :(” like ma’am the classics course you’re teaching next semester is literally called “tragedy”
even funnier was there was one rule for submissions and that was “Please don’t send me any more Percy Jackson”
i send her fate and receive no response. the first day i walk into class in august the professor approaches me and swings a copy of the textbook at my head, killing me instantly. i deserve it.
my friends and i have this game we play where one person acts as host and goes onto r/somnivexillology, the subreddit dedicated to flags that have shown up in peoples dreams, and pick out a flag. the host then reads out the title of the flag, and gives the players a clue. the players then recreate their own interpretations of the flag prompt, and once everyone is done, they post their flags and the host reveals the original flag and picks a winner. its the best thing weve ever done.
one of the best ones was like this:
the prompt was “flag of the crabs that were hunting me down for war crimes” and the hint was “gay pride”
we have dexters entry:
we have teddys entry:
we have the, objectively, far more boring original flag:
last night was pretty special
i hosted a round. the prompt was “The flag of Guam that I found on a book about Guam.” and the hint was “primary colors, a specific dreamworks protagonist, and a character ive thought about today”
and the results were ASTOUNDING
we have dexters entry:
we have teddys entry:
and we have the original flag:
none of these are anywhere close to what the flag of guam looks like. the country from the original flag ISNT EVEN GUAM
Wait …theres a subreddit about ….flags people see …in their dreams????? Wow
there’s a subreddit for everything. there’s a subreddit for people named dan. there’s a subreddit for people who eat oranges in the shower.
““He (David Byrne)’s a genuine eccentric,” says Eno. “He’s always been exactly like that, and I’ve seen him remain like that in quite extreme situations. For instance, we were mugged together once in New York. It was quite frightening; we were mugged by 14 people. My enduring memory is of David being dragged off into the bushes, saying ‘Uh-oh!’ That’s absolutely true; it was like a cartoon scene.””
i listen to ABBA whenever i’m alone at night because it makes the general atmosphere less “going to be murdered by something in the shadows” but also because it would be pretty funny if i were brutally slaughtered at 2am while “Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)” is playing in the background
