People are dunking on Guillermo del Toro’s new Pinocchio film bc it’s set in fascist Italy and like…they’re baffled by the idea of Guillermo del Toro making a fairy tale intercut with real historic horrors…? They think it’s inherently laughable as a concept?
Read an interview where he said “All you need to be human is to really behave like one, you know? I have never believed that transformation [should] be demanded to gain love” and “The virtue Pinocchio has is to disobey. picture if you will, that you are a well-to-do individual in the 70s. you have just committed the perfect murder of your spouse or business partner or something. you’ve set up all the evidence to clear of you of all possible suspicion. and now you’re on a plane on your way to a distant country under the guise of a business trip until it blows over. you are relaxing in your window seat. the pilot announces a storm approaching. as the sky darkens and turbulence hits, you look out the window. your face goes white as a sheet. there. on the plane wing. detective columbo.
this is an old man yells at cloud moment but it’s kinda weird to see so many people (rightfully) complain about Bad Retellings and adult YA book culture also ignore the elephant in the room that is the state of art under capitalism. these books are specifically designed to sell and they only care about that. they are devoid of anything complex and are easily digestible by design because they are meant to make money. as long as the consumer buys them, their purpose is served. it’s a transaction. the rotten core of the problem aren’t bad authors or bad readers (bad literature has always existed and people with the reading comprehension of a tuna can aren’t anything new), the problem is that money breeds soulless creatures. publishers want customers, not readers. it’s not just a matter of individual bad taste, it’s a money-driven behemoth of shit

Fyi this isn’t a dig at people who are asexual or sex-repulsed. Gay sex was literally a criminal act in the parts of the United States Texas until 2003. A healthy relationship to both sex and your body is a major component of the human experience, but especially LGBTQ+ people. Yes this includes people who have a healthy understanding of their boundaries with regards to sex. To try and divorce the fight for LGBTQ+ rights from sexuality is both dangerous and ahistorical.
