Something I never get quite used to is when someone mentions the time the US government provenly caused a genocide in their countries, or helped some totalitarian dictator do a coup there, and some american goes “geez, wasn’t that like 20 years ago? Come on dude…🙄 ”
We had to stop the communists. Nothing else mattered then.
When communism takes hold in a country it atomizes society and starves millions of people to death. It also robs life of meaning by destroying art and systematically undermining religion, leading to a populace with no hope and no inner life.
Are we supposed to let that happen everywhere? As Henry Kissinger said, sometimes democracies make mistakes and we have t fix them.
It’s apple pie, football, and the Marlboro Man versus rancid gruel / starvation, public mass-executions, and the zombie apocalypse.
My (27M) boss (59M) offered me a promotion to head archivist, despite me being a junior member of the research team and having no education in library science or other qualifications whatsoever, after the previous archivist (70F) “died in the line of duty”. Should I take it?
i love the dynamic that is “straight-laced detective falls in love with the cocky little shit of a thief they’re trying to catch” because there’s always a moment where the detective character realizes they’re in love with this charming bastard they’re supposed to be taking in
who’s been dragging them around on a wild goose chase for weeks
and lets them go only to discover a short while later that one or more of their possessions has been stolen without them noticing because the thief wants to make sure they’ll keep pursuing and interacting with them so they can get it back when they meet again and it’s like. just flirt like normal people you absolute morons.
the cops: you have to bring this guy in detective, they’re a wanted criminal!
