i know this is like a famous line but i’m still impressed that someone translated that part from Agamemnon as “Rightfully is she called Helen: hell for ships, hell for men, hell for cities” because it preserves the pun in the original Greek

#m #read it in freshman year and i was like :O #ἑλέναυς ἕλανδρος ἑλέπτολις #big W for translators #literally translated it's like 'destroyer of ships destroyer of ships destroyer of cities' #and helen and destroy don't sound similar #but coincidentally one of the most influential religions has a concept of eternal punishment that DOES sound like helen
