the reptile house was always my favorite exhibit as a kid whenever my parents brought us to the zoo because tigers and stuff? loud. yelling people. very hectic!
reptile house? dim lighting. indoors. nice and quiet. i could stare at a big snake or scorpion for as long as i liked.
i remember one time i went i was trying to read the signs for the snakes despite being in third grade and a zoo employee told me i was very well behaved and asked me if i liked the animals. i nodded. he asked me if i knew how to read all the words. i shook my head. he then taught me how to sound out the scientific names. i felt like a genius when i went up to my mom and told her that my favorite frog was “dendrobates leucomelas”
