i used to sort of believe in ghosts because when i would try to fall asleep at night i would hear whispering and weird sounds. but then i went to my psychologist and she was like “yeah that’s actually probably just auditory hallucinations. they’re pretty much okay. try to sleep with a white noise machine.” and now i can just sleep with the fan on and it’s okay
anyway i think that a lot of “hauntings” can be attributed to that too. because all those hauntings you hear about in big ol houses are usually ones with a substantial yard so
- stress of moving
- lack of ambient noises like cars means the house is like completely silent and the brain Doesn’t Like That
- lack of sleep because of moving means they’re even more likely to occur.
- the stress of thinking you’re being haunted because of the above reasons means you’re not gonna sleep that well and ends up in a cycle of sleep deprivation
also old houses are gonna have drafts and stuff and i’m pretty sure i read somewhere that a certain pitch of noise is similar to the growl of a lot of big predators so theoretically the sound of wind through cracks could imitate this noise and activate the brain’s “Oh Fuck Big Monster Get the Fuck Out” response
