my fave thing about marco polo mistaking a rhino for a unicorn is that at no point did he go “hmmm. maybe this is not the mythical unicorn I have heard so much about but rather a different animal altogether” he just looked at a rhino and went “well i guess unicorns are actually ugly and i’ve been lied to my entire life”
